New Release: The Super Mario Galaxy Movie

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie was a disappointment. Actually, even worse, it was a bore.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie (2026)

Maybe it’s because the first one was a pleasant surprise, but the sequel fell victim to what most sequels do…too much visual, not enough story. Mario and the gang are on a quest to find and help Princess Rosalina, but with a lack of dialogue and too many characters to spread out the thin dialogue, you're find yourself checked out.

I guess if you're a Yoshi fan, it's almost worth it

SMG was a beautiful movie. The visuals hold up from the first. It’s fun to look at, the animation is extremely good (not Ne Zha good, but good). Kids will be held at attention by the colors, fast movements, and realistic-looking characters. I suppose the other plus for this movie is that it is only an hour and 36ish minutes, because when I say it’s a struggle to lock in for this movie…I mean it.

Toad wasn't the only one wondering why there are so many newbies involved

But trust me, if you find yourself losing interest or dozing during those 96ish minutes, don’t feel bad about it. The lack of substance makes it hard to care what is happening on the screen. Just about every sequel gets over its skis and introduces you to way too many characters when the first film is successful, leading to these characters feeling like cameos without any real weight in the story. Plus, adding a dozen new characters and giving them each about two lines keeps the real meat of the story. There is a noticeable lack of dialogue in this movie, once again highlighting the overuse of gameplay and visuals.

Will it make a billion dollars?  Probably, but this should just further the argument that a big box office does not equate to a good movie.  Think last year’s Lilo & Stitch.

That being said, the kids seemed to love it, and that is who the movie is geared towards.

Will the kids cheer at the end and gasp at the credits? Most likely, but don’t feel bad if what you’re cheering for is the movie coming to an end. Rating 2.5/5
