Steven Soderbergh's Black Bag returns with his classic vibe in this modern spy thriller. It blends his signature sharp storytelling, moody lighting, and an evocative score that sounds like it is pulled directly from Ocean's Eleven.

Michael Fassbender and Cate Blanchett lead the film with their undeniable chemistry, playing wonderfully off each other in a cat-in-mouse spy game. Their performances are magnetic, and the dialogue is almost razor-sharp. The supporting cast—Tom Burke, Marisa Abela, Rege-Jean Page, and Naomie Harris—deliver standout moments, each bringing an added layer to the film, further showcasing Soderbergh's talents of putting together an ensemble.

The film moves at a frenetic pace, around 90ish minutes, embracing a "who dunnit" energy that keeps the audience engaged in figuring out the puzzle. The climax, a brilliantly staged table scene, instantly calls to mind the best of Clue—full of biting exchanges, twists, and the kind of tension that makes people who love this type of storytelling- ME- enjoy this film. If I have any complaints, they could stem from the fact that because the film is so engaging, it leaves you wanting more—particularly in terms of backstory for the agency and supporting characters. A bit more screen time for Pierce Brosnan might have added depth, though it's debatable whether it would have worked without disrupting the film's quick, efficient pacing.

Ultimately, Black Bag is a fun, dark, cat-and-mouse spy mystery that stands out at this time of year at the theaters.
