Tiny Oscars Recap

Another year, another award season done, so here's a bitesize Oscars recap...

Surprises of the night:
Michael B Jordan probably lands the biggest shock of the night. Before the Oscars, most of the odds were on Timothee Chalamet winning Best Actor, but MBJ ended up taking home the trophy for his work in Sinners, playing twins Smoke and Stack.
I don’t think anyone is denying MBJ’s talent, but many thought Chalamet’s Marty Mauser was a lock. Rumors are that his frenetic campaign tactics probably wore thin with some of the older Academy voters, causing him to lose this year’s trophy.
I don’t think many were surprised that Sean Penn didn't show up to the ceremony, so I’m not sure his absence counts as “surprise.” But if you expected to see him, I’m adding it here. Lol

Best Win:
I have to say, overall, the biggest winner, in my opinion, was the horror genre. Now, one could argue that 8 awards out of 24 aren’t HUGE, but they are a major victory for a genre that the Oscars have overlooked. Wins for Sinners, Frankenstein, and Weapons in some major categories (best actor, best supporting actress, original screenplay, and so on) are a major victory for horror. 2025 was a huge year for horror, and I’m glad to see it represented last night. This success should make us feel hopeful about the future of diverse genres in cinema.

Snubs:
Marty Supreme (one of my picks for best of the year) went home with nary an award. Just goes to show you what I know in this industry lol.

Overall:
Super happy with Sinners, Frankenstein, Weapons, and KPop Demon Hunters getting awarded for a job well done last year. These were fun, beautiful, original (outside of Frankenstein) ideas that Hollywood cooked up for us last year, and, in my opinion, we’re always the better for it when cinema does well. I hope more fun, beautifully shot horror happens in the years to come, and I can’t wait to see more and more people nominated in this industry. Beautiful art can be found in the creepiest of places.
Catch y’all later xoxo
