Quick Hits: From Tron Ares to After the Hunt

I know four people probably skim this, so shout out to you guys.

little yellow minions wearing overalls are cheering
You're the true champs for reading this slop

What would you even like to know right now? I'm so behind on everything, so I feel like I could randomly talk about anything and it would help to chip away at the overwhelmingness I think constantly.

Movie reviews are hard to keep up with during this time of year. I think a few weeks in October, I was seeing 3-4 movies a week.

Before you say, "Oh, that must be so fun", I know this is a first-world problem. I get it. However, driving 40 minutes to and 40 minutes home from a 2.5-hour movie 3Xs a week gets tiring, especially when you're old like me.

Here are some quick hits:

Tron: Ares 3/5

a man in a black and red uniform stands in front of a woman and another man
Was it Jared's fault this sucked? (Tron:Ares)

The visuals and score were terrific, but definitely made for the big screen. It'll lose all appeal on TV. Sorry, that's just my opinion, because there isn't much of a story there, and unless you can shut off your phone, get your house completely dark, and focus on how it looks...eh. I mean, they tried.

Roofman 3/5

a man sticks his head out, between aisles at a store, looking at something
Cute movie that shouldn't be (Roofman)

Listen. It's a compelling story. Look up the story about Jeffrey Manchester if the movie doesn't interest you. But I got ick vibes from him being played as such an affable guy. I don't care how charming he might've been; there were a WHOLE lot of people victimized by this guy. Like I said, the story is wild, but it made me uncomfortable. I'm a wuss.

Ballad of a Small Player 3.5/5

a man, in a red suit coat and wearing mustard colored gloves is sitting at a casino table with money chips in front of him
Colin is electric in Ballad of a Small Player

Once again, Colin Farrell is bringing the smoke. He's just so compelling and I think the story in Ballad would've swallowed up a lesser actor. He's frantic, vulnerable, chaotic, all set against a great Volker score. Check this out on Netflix and let me know what you think. I want to give it another look to see if I can figure out if clues were there for the twist.

After the Hunt 2/5

a woman looking shocked and a man standing behind her looking at her
Great cast, complete snoozer (After the Hunt)

This movie should've been something. A contender, as the great Brando would say. But it was poopy. Great cast, acting their tails off. But with such a nothing burger of a plot, the only standout is Michael Stuhlbarg. You look forward to him being on the screen because, with him there, you can enjoy something. Someone who breaks up the utter mindless droning on about nothing during scenes. My opinion? Avoid it. But if you want visual punishment? Take a look.

I'm almost caught up, you four. So take a moment to relish the exquisite written word by yours truly and I'll catch you all later. xoxo
